Pittsburgh is the Point of Civilization!!!

Marc R.

How can you not the love the city of Pittsburgh?

Super XLIII cemeneted the undeniable fact that the Steelers are the best team in the NFL. It also showed that Pittsburgh is the best city in the entire United States.

I know everyone is going to argue that Philly, L.A., Chicago and NYC are the best cities, but let's examine Da 'Burgh.

First...most cities have one major waterway near it, Pittsburgh has three converaging at one point.

The Steel City has more educational institutions, with a positive impact, than anyone can think of.

Pitt leads the way as a research mogul, Point Pak College is a communications powerhouse, Duquense has a great poli-sci department and then there is Carnegie Mellon...need I say more?

Oh, and do not forget the surrounding institutions like Cal, Slippery Rock and even Clarion (if you want to travel a little bit).

Next up...pop culture icons, Cultural centers and "city of industry" people.

I am only going to name a few...The Heinz family, Andy Warhol and Kennywood.

Now on to sports...

From Honus Wagner to Billy Maz. to Roberto to Van Slyke; the Pirates are up there in baseball

From Franco, the Immaculate Reception and Jack Lambert to Kevin Green and now Big Ben...The Steelers ARE the Best in football

Mario, Mike Lang, Malkin and Sid the Kid have been the foundation of the Pens - Past and Present

Dan Marino, Tony, Larry and Shady are names synonmous with PITT.

Plus, the numerous high school products that have gone on to strong pro careers.

Oh and how can we forget that Pittsburgh has been used to film such classics as Gung Ho and Sudden Death !!!

Pittsburgh is the father of radio and products such as Ray Scott, Jack Fleming, Myron Cope, John Clayton and Bill Hillgrove.

I can go on and on and on.....Pittsburgh is the best city in the state, the country and the world!!!

I move to start a petition to have Ed Rendell set up office inside the Hilton at the Point!!!

I’ve seen this before

D-Spat

Last night as the Penguins headed into the third period down 3-0, I had written them off.

I told myself, they’re just too flat to come back from this one. They can’t keep doing this.

So on and so on. Blah, blah … blah. I was down.

Then something truly amazing happened and something hopefully inspirational for the Pens.

The best player in the world, who was already having a tremendous game took it up another notch as he continues to do. As only a special player can.
Evgeni Malkin is flat out the best hockey player in the world right now. Nobody is playing at the level he is. He’s a game-changer.
Time and time again, he’s put this team on his back.

He did last season with Sid was hurt and he did again last night from the opening faceoff.

He played amazing, he played the complete game.

He was inspirational, flying all over the ice.

Checking, hitting, passing and shooting. He did it all.

Malkin shouldered the load.

He’s done it before.

Last night was different.

Coach Terrien recently (and finally) made him a permanent alternate captain, a honor he deserved.

Afterall, it’s a role he’s fit for.

Last night before the third period, Malkin addressed the team. Something he doesn’t often do.

But, last night he talked the talked and then walked the walk.

Just minutes into the third period, he scored a goal.

He’s dominate and passionate play in the third helped the Pens send the game to overtime.

Malkin, fittingly finished it off with just 16 seconds left in overtime.

He finished with two goals and an assist.

He did all the little things.

He looked like somebody I’ve seen before in the Penguins lineup. He looked like owner Mario

Lemieux, who had times put the team on his shoulders during slumps.

This could the turning point for the reeling Pens.

They’re not out of it yet, but close.

Malkin is to thank.

It was one of the most amazing one-man performances I’ve ever seen.

It looked familiar and all to recent.

It looked like another Pittsburgh great.

It looked like another, donned in Black and Gold, who put his team on his back, put the whole city of Pittsburgh on his shoulders and carried the load.
Just when you thought they were done, it looked like scene all too familiar for the Pittsburgh fans.
It looked like Ben Roethlisberger.

I mean he was sitting next to Lemuiex all night

'Twas the night before the Super Bowl, when along the gulf shore,
Steelers fans were praying for "just one more;"
The players were nestled all snug in the sack,
With visions of the first NFL Six-Pack;
Coach Tomlin was young, but wise for his years,
So I drifted off to sleep without any fears;
When at the stadium there arose some strange chatter,
The Cardinals feared, what was the matter;
We heard "Okel Dokel", we heard "Double Yoi,"
We jumped from our beds, our hearts jumped for joy;
He stood at the fifty with a grin ear to ear,
Steelers fans everywhere started to cheer;
Then in an instant to our surprise,
This little old man had tears in his eyes;
He went to the booth and there took his chair,
While Terrible Towels waved in the air;
Then over the airwaves came his shrill voice,
The Steelers Nation began to rejoice;
He said, "I am back, but you know I can't stay,
I just had to see my Steelers play;
From my home up above, I have a great view,
But I wanted to celebrate here with you;
So bring on the Birds, we'll send them a flyin',
On the way back to Phoenix , they will be cryin';
Ben, Hines, Troy , Jeff and all of the rest,
No matter the outcome, to me you're the best;"
The airwaves went silent, the stadium still,
Was this just a dream, it seemed so real;
In our team we have faith, in our team we have hope,
But the game's not the same without Myron Cope;

The time has come!

D-Spat

I’ve been a little off my game this week, recovering from a bout with phenomena, surely one I contracted at the AFC championship, thanks to near-tundra like temperatures.

Feeling tired this week has given me the opportunity to take on an overload of NFL Network.
Thanks for the NFL Network, I’ve was able to catch media day and all the unnecessary hoopla that came along with it.

One thing is for certain, I’m seen enough of the hype and am ready for the game.

Honestly, I can’t wait for the game.

Another thing is for certain and on a complete side note, Dion Sanders might lead the best interviews, let’s face it, the kids got a knack for it.

Back to business.

It’s go time, simply put, now it’s time to greatest night of the year.

I feel like I’m playing,

It feels like 2000 Maryland High School 4A East Regional Boy’s Soccer Semifinal.

I was amped, all of Arden was amped. (*editors note Old Mill toppled rival Glen-Burnie 5-1 in an Epic drama filled battle on the pitch on Homecoming – Doug Spatafore scored, so did Sean Smith, Raven’s Fan who hasn’t spoken to Doug since AFC Championship).

There is nothing better than the anticipation of a big game, but two weeks is brutal.

I want you all to remember 2006 and where you were when the Black and Gold won it all.

I’m doing everything the same, the exact same, from sleeping in a tent the night before.
Karma baby.

This one is for us, the hardcore Stiller Fan.

I want you all to enjoy it, because let’s face it, when the Steelers are winning, there’s no better party. Trust me I’ve encountered it first hand time and time again.

You don’t have to be there.

You’re there in spirit.

Afterall it’s a Steeler Nation.

So whether you’re in Tampa, Pittsburgh, Rote, Annapolis or Italy, It’s go time. The Stillers have there Nation ready and couple hardcore fans looking down on them. Everybody will be ready come Sunday.

Let the party begin, the excitement has taken over my life. I will not sleep until Monday.

Break out the Black and Gold and wear it proudly on Sunday … and Monday … and Tuesday and FOREVER because come Sunday there will be no greater Nation.

Check out these kids, they're awesome http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DkTflRQzCZg

The Man Behind the Mic!

Marc R.

As Super Sunday approaches, we are flooded with all of the talk, discussion and arguing over who is going to win the "Big Game".

The self-proclaimed experts will discuss amongst themselves on television, radio or even the web - the matchups, the key plays and players for the game. But all this does not matter because on Sunday, Pittsburgh will have to walk out on that field and play for the right to stand alone as the first-ever, six-time Super Bowl Champions!

More than that, The Steelers will have a man behind the mic that will be calling play-by-play for the historic game.

He shuffles into a room, puts his headset on and paints a picture that even Picasso is jealous of.

His voice is one that ressonates across the radio airwaves and is synonymous with the Steel City.

He is Mr. Bill Hillgrove. He deserves the "Mr." in front of his name because he is as respectful to the common person as he is to a 15-year NFL veteran. Therefore, he deserves the respect in return.

I had the pleasure of meeting this man and watching him while he performs his craft. Like his predecessor Jack Fleming, he is just as important to the game as the pads and helmets.

You beg to differ?

Turn on a local Steelers affiliate and listen for five minutes. Mr. Hillgrove is not just there for a job. He is very knowledgeable of the game and puts more effort into a broadcast with his research as five play-by-play people for CBS or Fox combined.

Mr. Hillgrove's call on Sunday evening is going to be just as historic as the game itself.

He is one of the few left. A true passionate radio play-by-play man who is a perfect fit for the team and the city. A hometown man who is just as blue-collar as the team he broadcasts.

On Sunday, fifteen minutes before all of the hoopla, turn on the radio and close your eyes. Listen to Mr. Hillgrove and he will make you feel like you are sitting on the 50-yard line of Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, FL.

There always here

D-Spat

The one nice thing about the Steelers is that they win and win often.

At the beginning of every season, the Steelers have the chance to win the Superbowl.

You know that’s the goal with they break camp in Latrobe.

It starts at the top.

Solid ownership, a smart front office, good coaches and players that are, well, football players.

Those players know what it means to be a Pittsburgh Steeler and let’s face it they love it; they soak up every minute of it.

There is no better city to play in.

We are the most loyal fan base around and it will be very evident come Sunday in Tampa when the Terrible Towels will be out in full force.

Again, it’s great to be a Stiller fan.

We win and know that every year we have chance to win it all.

We are just over two days away from the biggest game of the year.

My emotional state has once again hit an all-time high, but that’s every time the Steelers play.

Because I know we always have a shot.

No matter what, we have a shot every game and until the final whistle blows we are always alive because of the men suited up in black and gold.

We have giants on defense in the form of James Farrior and James Harrison.

We have clutch in the form of Heath Miller and Jeff Reed.

We have game-changers in the form of Santonio Holmes and Troy Polamalu.

We have our heart in the in from of Hines Ward and Big Ben.

We need not say more than a name!

Doubled up today for good luck!

Polamalu

Sorry, I'm very ill, this should have been yesterday's

D-Spat

If you look up Polamalu in the dictionary, you’ll find nothing.

Polamalu doesn’t exist in the dictionary, but it should.

And it should be an adjective.

An adjective that describes something far from greatness, far from amazing and something far from ordinary. Something, which truly is one of a kind in all accounts.

After all, Polamalu is the only word that can even come remotely close to describing Troy Polamalu, the best all around athlete in the NFL.

There is no better or bigger game-changer currently gracing a NFL lineup.

Athletic just doesn’t do him justice.

Fast isn’t the right word.

Special isn’t enough.

The word great is far too overused on stuff that is far from greatness.

Polamalu is better than great.

I have never seen an athlete in a single sport change big games like Polamalu has time and time again this year.

In my young 25 years I’ve been blessed to see some amazing athletes, but nothing comes close to what Polamala can do the field.

He’s a freak of nature.

He’s a Polamalu!

Steelers Joke 1/28/09

*This Joke Courtesy: Mario Burkett*

STEELERS BABY
A Pittsburgh Steelers fan is drinking in a Cleveland bar, when he gets a call on his cell phone. He hangs up, grinning from ear to ear, and orders a round of drinks for everybody in the bar, announcing his wife has just given birth to a typical Pittsburgh baby boy weighing 25 pounds.

Nobody can believe that any new baby can weigh in at 25 pounds, but the Steelers fan just shrugs and replies: "That's about average back home, folks, like I said, my boy's a typical Pittsburgh baby boy.""He's gonna be a Pittsburgh Steelers football player." Congratulations showered him from all around, amid many exclamations of "WOW!"One woman actually fainted due to sympathy pains.

Two weeks later, he returns to the bar. The bartender says: "Say, aren't you the father of that typical Pittsburgh baby that weighed 25 pounds at birth? Everybody's been making bets about how big he'd be in two weeks.""So, how much does he weigh now?"The proud father answers: "Seventeen pounds."The bartender is puzzled, concerned and a little suspicious. "What happened? He already weighed 25 pounds the day he was born!"

The Steelers fan father takes a slow swig of his beer, wipes his lips on his shirt sleeve, leans into the bartender and proudly says:"HAD HIM CIRCUMCISED!!!."

GO STEELERS!!!!

Tampa is STEELERS COUNTRY, Monday is for Myron

By: D. Spat

Well boys and girls, we did it. And yes, as a proud member of Stiller Nation I can proudly and wholeheartedly say we did it.

You can say we did it too, because we did.

We made a difference, we always do and we will once again this weekend.

We are a Nation, a nation of black and gold, a nation based on history and passion,

A STEELER NATION.

And now, we’re going to Tampa to play in our seventh Super Bowl. We get to try and win our sixth, more than any other team in history.

As of press time, we are five days, 133 hours, 8001 seconds and 480050 seconds away from kickoff at Super Bowl XLIII. (Countdown http://www.timeanddate.com/counters/customcounter.html?month=Feb&day=1&year=2009&hour=&min=&sec=&p0=198)

I for one can’t wait.

If you think the Monday before AFC Championship was tough, how about last week.

The bye week has come and gone and now it’s back to business.

If you didn’t get pumped for the showdown with Ravens, shame on you but I know I’m talking to some hardcore fans.

Keep that black and gold out and WAVE THOSE TOWELS BABY, it’s go time.

I can’t even describe how pumped I am. This is going to be a long week.

I’ve also come to the conclusion that Monday’s will forever remain for Myron. Hey, why change a good thing.

Myron, you’re the man, a true legend.

Here are two awesome videos. The first is about six minutes and the second is about three.

Please take a minute to check them out. I cried when I first found them months ago, I cried last night watching them again and I cried this morning watching them each for 100th time.

Hey what can I say, I’m a passionate person. I’m a Steeler fan.

Myron truly was a legend and will be smiling down on his beloved Stillers this week.

Yoy, you double yoy!

"America's New Team!"

By: Marc R.

Now I cannot offer the same first-hand experience as my colleague when it comes to the 2009 AFC Championship experience.

Mine was filled with chips, various kinds of dips, homemade pizza and of course beverages.

I was not brave enough to venture out in the cold with two of the wildest Italian-Americans I have ever met!!

However, when Polamalu intercepted that duck Flacco called a pass, I knew my friends at Heinz Field shared the same emotions I did - joy, happiness and the idea that history is going to repeat itself.

When the Steelers win and cap off the six-pack, Punxsatawney Phil will wake up the next day and realize that the shadow he sees is not his own, but that of a dynasty that will hover over the entire NFL!

The Black and Gold may not have appeared in the most Super Bowls (that honor goes to Dallas), but they will stand alone in the league as the only teams with six trophies!!

Sure, everyone will argue about the Patriots reign in the late nineties/new millenium.

The Cowboys and 49ers will be in the topic of discussion also. The Bills maybe (I emphasize that) will be talked about their 4 straight AFC Championship crowns.

However, no team will have achieved what Pittsburgh has.

The Rooney family, I salute you!

You have taken the ideals of the blu-collar working man and instilled it into your franchise!!

Because of your willingness to stay true to your values, On Sunday February 1st, you will ensured that the Pittsburgh Steelers need to be given the title.....

"America's Team"

WOW WOW WOW, Pittsburgh's Goin' to the Super Bowl

By D-Spat

All, sorry for not updating the blog. Next week will be hardcore like last. Honestly, I’ve been in recovery, I feel like I played. Between the jumping up and down, the cold, the yelling and screaming … my body feels like I ran marathon.

But, WOW.

Really, even two days later that’s all I can really say.

It was amazing and I was there.

My cousin Danny and I were there.

All my friends talked about going to the game.

As prices soared, people dropped out.

As it got closer, all backed out. Too far to drive, too much money, it’s going to be too cold.

At end of the week, TWO SPATAFOREs stood tall.

Surprise … Surprise.

Armed with Terrible Towels in hand, IC Light a plenty and draped from head to toe in black in gold we made our journey to Da’Burgh.

We were there; we took it in, like only our fathers would have done.

Like the Spatafore men did many times before, we followed in their footsteps and were warriors.
To be there with my cousin was truly a special moment.

The crowd made the game that much better, but let’s face it our TEAM came up big.

You can’t beat a time three times, please!

And nothing better than beating the Hated Ravens.

It was the coldest time of my life, I still have no feeling in my fingers tips, even as I write this. Our beverages froze in seconds.

Getting to the game, the AFC Championship, the cold, the snow, the atmosphere, Pittsburgh during a playoff game, the fans, the chants, the two teams, the rivalry, the BOUNTY, the game itself the, the outcome, the biggest crowd in Heinz Field History, being with my cousin, being a Italian American … WOW.

It was truly the best night of my life.

Knowing we were part of the biggest crowd ever was amazing.

STILLERS fans are the ultimate 12th man, there is no question in my mind after this game.

The place was alive, it was AWESOME.

We were among 65,350 absolute animals.

Our uncle Gary was so proud of us.

I know my Dad was watching and smiling down on us.

We were maniacs, after all the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.

Hey, Pittsburgh’s goin’ to the SuperBowl!

My emotional state is still out of this world.

Here are two links for you guys.

This is the new Here We Go song. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mk1OrZoAsA8

And I’m so mad it I didn’t find this last week, but this is awesome too. This guy is an animal for making this. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OmP-nm0jaZE&feature=related

Here’s the crowd after game singing Here We Go (I’m pretty sure I started this chat!) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8IURsUXZBvY

Stillers Joke!

Golden Telephone

A man in Topeka , Kansas decided to write a book about Churches around the country. He started by flying to San Francisco and started working east from there.
Going to a very large church, he began taking photographs and making notes. He spotted a golden telephone on the vestibule wall and was intrigued with a sign, which read "Calls: $10,000 a minute."

Seeking out the pastor he asked about the phone and the sign. The pastor answered that this golden phone is, in fact, a direct line to heaven and if he pays the price he can talk directly to God.

The man thanked the pastor and continued on his way. As he continued to visit churches in Seattle , Dallas , St. Louis , Chicago, Milwaukee , and around the United States , he found more phones, with the same sign, and the same answer from each pastor.
Finally, he arrived in Pennsylvania . Upon entering a Church in Pittsburgh, he saw the usual golden telephone. But THIS time, the sign read "Calls: $0.35 cents."

Fascinated, he asked to talk to the pastor, "Father Jones, I have been in cities all across the country and in each church I have found this golden telephone and have been told it is a direct line to Heaven and that I could talk to God, but in the other churches the cost was $10,000 a minute. Your sign reads only $0.35 cents a call. Why?

The priest, smiling benignly, replied : "Son, you're in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania now, home of the Pittsburgh Steelers-5 times Super Bowl Champions, the Pittsburgh Pirates, the Pittsburgh Pengins, 3 vibrant rivers meeting at the Point of the most beautiful downtown area around, the city with the best hospitals, neighborhoods and friendliest people in the world! You're in God's Country....

It's a local call."

AMEN

It's go time

D-Spat

Well boys and girls, it’s go time.

At this point in the week, you just have to throw everything else out the door.

Honestly, who cares that we beat them twice already. So what they have a rookie QB.

It’s time to put up and shut up.

It’s time to line up and punch somebody in the jaw.

It’s time to cover grass stains with blood stains.

IT’S GO TIME!

Now is when boys become men.

Now is when men become heroes.

Now is when football players become legends and cultural figures for years to come.

Now is when sport becomes life.

Now is when a game played for 60 minutes takes over our lives and captivates a nation, Stiller
Nation, a world – The World of the Black and Gold.

Because we all know, Steeler Nationa has become Steeler World.

IT’S GO TIME!

The countdown is on. http://www.timeanddate.com/counters/customcounter.html?month=Jan&day=18&year=2009&hour=6+p.m&min=30&sec=0&p0=179

Now is when the legendery Black and Gold, the Pittsburgh men of Steel, our beloved Stillers makes us proud one more time.

We have the history, we have the passion and we have the team to do it.
2009 is our year, the year of the sixth.

On Sunday, Pittsburgh will rise to the top once more.

I’d love to write more, my emotional state of mind is at whole new high … I’m already floatin’ down the Allegheny, the Ohio and the Monongahela.

6:30 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 18. A battle of two giants, a battle of epic proportions.
World War III between the black and goal and some other group of clowns dressed in purple.
Bounty, what bounty?

Let’s bring it home boys and keep my boy Hines smilin’ one more time.

We’ll be smiling come Monday morning.

God Bless Steeler Nation.

HERE WE GO … HERE WE GO … PITTSBURGH’S GOIN’ TO THE SUPERBOWL … HERE WE GO! ###

A Commentary on Rendell's Commentating!

By: Marc R.

As I sit here contemplating on how much food and drinks to consume on Sunday, I wonder what Govenor Rendell is going to do.

Yeah Right!

I think back to the Steelers-Seahawks game for Super Bowl XL and seeing our state's governor on NFL Live on ESPN to talk about the game and all of a sudden he is wearing black and gold to root on the Steelers!

How dare he!

This is the same man that is a so-called "commentator" on Comcast for sixteen or more weeks a year covering the Filth-a-delphia Eagles.

What a Politician!?!

Why am I mad? Because once again we have an opportunity to see some "Turnpike Turmoil" and all Rendell is talking about on that second-rate Pa. network is how great Andy Reid's beard is. It is a waste of 43 cents on my cable bill.

I would rather watch Rob King and the Tunch-a-strator any day over that stuff!

...Finally to my point...

If the Birds lose and when the Steelers win, I guarantee Rendell will be wearing Black and Gold and cheering for the Steelers on Feb. 1st.

On the other hand, if we do have an all-Pa. Super Bowl, I am going to venture a guess that Rendell will be pro-Philly.

If you are a true Western Pa. and Black and Gold fan, remember that the next time you step into to the voting booth.

One thing nobody, I mean nobody is taking with them

One thing nobody, I mean nobody is taking with them
By: D-Spat

Things have left Pittsburgh many times before.

My parents left Pittsburgh … they took me.

Many others before my parents left Pittsburgh, many of them long before they did.

They left not because they hated the city, but because they had too, whether it be for work, school or anything along those lines.

When I left Pittsburgh, I’d like to think I took my Western, Pa. values with me.

You know, the kind my mom and dad took.

Let’s face it, “Pittsburghers’ and Western Pa-ers’” are a just a bit together than you’re average Joe.

Even the white collors have a bit of blue of in them.

It’s that succeed at all costs kinda’ attitude, that I’m just a bit tougher than you “tude.”

And that’s why the Stillers have so many fans wherever they go.

The old saying is we don’t travel well, we’re already there is true.
A lot had to do with the original decline in the steel and coal mills in Western, Pa. and that’s why so many Black and Gold hearted faithful have taken resident elsewhere.

Not because we don’t love the place we came from.

That’s just it, we love Da’Burgh, we love Western Pa.

And we love our teams, we’re passionate … a special kind of passion rooted deep in those Western Pa. hills.

We never turn out back on our teams no matter what because we know when they put on the Black and Gold they shoulder our dreams as well. They know we care about them and they know they’re playing in a special place.

After all Steeler Nation has gone Global, that’s a special city to play in when every game is home game, weather its Pitt, Baltimore, Sicily, Hong Kong, San Diego or Mexico City. We’re there.

Several years ago, something terrible happened to Western Pa. Again jobs would be cut, as the Rolling Rock Brewery based in Latrobe was moving.

This was a sad day for many and “33” has never tasted the same since leaving the fresh stream brewed water used so long to make the wonderful drink, has been replaced by some foreign substance, a new brewery swears is H20.

This morning, while reading the Pittsburgh papers as I do every morning, I was once again sickened by an article.

Surprisingly, it sadden me more than what I was reading on the decline of my beloved Pens. Afterall they’ll be fine.

What made me so sad was that Iron City is now moving its doors.

Iron City brewery is cutting back, cutting jobs and heading out of the Da’Burgh.

This is awful news as I turned back to the IC light and currently have 11 of them sitting my fridge after buying a case on Sunday.

My mom told me to go back to my roots and I did and drinking the IC light helped the Stillers dominate the Chargers.

Iron City brewery, a Pittsburgh staple and landmark.
Edward Fraueneir had a dream and since its original place of business on 17th street it was a Burgh landmark despite growth and new locations within Pittsburgh city limits.

Much has come and gone from Pittsburgh and Western Pa. but one thing won’t leave.

They’ve taken are beer, but they’ll never get this.

And that’s the AFC championship because it belongs it the Pittsburgh.

Afterall, in 2006 when Rolling Rock announced it was leaving, the Stillers won the Superbowl.
Is it fate, I don’t know … nobody says you can beat a team three times, but then again the Stillers did it in 2002, against a Division Rival.

Bottom Line, Western Pa-er’s are tough and they won’t go down without a fight especially when there’s something to fight for.

It’s all about the 12th man so let’s fight for our team, anyway we can … even it it’s just wearing your black and gold in front of the T.V.

Because hey, in the end it’s all about Karma Baby … Black and Gold Karma

As of press time, we’re just over 72 hours from kickoff and I for one, am stoked

Steelers Prayer

*This prayer was sent to us from Ms. Natalie Bohan - ENJOY!*

Our Father,
Who Art in Pittsburgh ,
Football Be Thy Game.
The Kingdom Come,
5 Super Bowls Won,
On Earth as it is in Heinz Field.
Give us this Day a playoff Victory,
And forgive us our penalties,
As we defeat those who play against us.
But lead us into a victory,
And deliver us to Tampa !

Pittsburgh is Madd(en)!

I was sitting back think about all of the great things that have happened in Pittsburgh. 250 plus years of success in the city in all aspects. We have had great sports moments, stars and even inventors. We have had everyone from Batman (Michael Keaton) to Jean Claude Van-Damme (Sudden Death) be associated with da'burgh. However, one man has made an impact on society and it may never recover. That man is Mr. Mark Madden.

For those of you who do not know Mark Madden, he is a legend. He is a writer, an on-air personailty and a professional wrestler! He first came to prominence during the Monday Night Wars in professional wrestling (1995-2001). He writing and "dirtsheet" reporting was some of the most accurate and intelligent in the business. He knew the business better than anyone! Sure he was controversial, but that was the nature of the business.

So what if he made negative remarks about DDP and Hugh Morris (their careers are real prelevant now). So what if he discussed personal business on the air. He coined the name for Booker T's finisher - "Spinarooni". That should be enough to define one man's career. He was asked to leave WCW before the merger with the WWE. Just in time!

Since then, he has found the way back to where he belongs. First, on ESPN 1250. They could not handle his style because he told the truth and you do not bring strong controversy to radio anymore. You become a "yes" man, something Madden is not! Now he is on 105.9 the X between 3-6pm.

While on the X, he covers sports and plays music that would only fit his personailty. I really didn't listen to much on the X until recently, but I do remeber his days in World Championship Wrestling. Madden's personality was born during the time of controversy and seeing how far the censors could be pushed.

Ever since the "wardrobe malfunction" of Super Bowl XXXVIII, our society has held its hand over its mouth in fear we may upset someone. I am glad Mark Madden is here to remind us to lighten up!

Thank You Mark.

Back in 1993, I had won four tickets to a Pittsburgh Pirates game in drawing at Riverside Markets (now known as Bi-Lo) near my hometown. I didn't tell my mother I had entered my name to win because I never thought I'd win and it was a sneaky move for a young child. Imagine how excited I was when my parents said we were making a trip to the Steel City to Three River Stadium to watch nine innings of the team I had followed since my father put the Pirates nightlight in my bedroom at a young age.

When the three family members I had chosen and myself rode up the escalator in this old, broken down stadium, my eyes were just as big as those on cristmas morning. We had peanuts (hard shelled of course), hot dogs and soda. It was better than my birthday!

All I talked about on that ride up the escalator was watching my favorite player, Andy Van Slyke. He wore a gold cross, so did I. He didn't use batting gloves, neither did I. He tugged on the shoulder of his shirt during his pre-swing routine, so did I. He wore number 18, so did I.

As we walked out of the tunnel, all I could see was green grass, dirt and players the size of ants. But I was determined, I knew Andy Van Slyke was going to start in centerfield and hit a homerun to me, all the way in the cheap seats! So I waited and waited for the starting lineup to be announced.

Van Slyke always batted third - his name was announced! I listened four through nine and no number #18. You know who started that night in his place - Al Martin. Yes, Al Martin?

I never got to see my hero play. I had his rookie card, his "Slick" Poster and his signed Louisville Slugger Wooden Bat. I never got to see him in person in black a gold. Shortly there after, he had stint in Baltimore (I was a fan of the O's) and then the Phillies (I liked them too). Then the dreaded day came when he retired!

Now, he is the first base coach of the Tigers!

If the Pirates management were smart, they would woo #18 back to the Point to run the ship that is slowly sinking into Atlantis. Attendance is way and at least with Van Slyke, fans would come to the game to watch him manage.

I am not trying to downgrade the job John Russell is trying to do, but with the successful background Van Slyke has had on the field and now learning from Jim Leyland in the dugout, it seems like a no-brainer.

But then again, this is the same team that signed two pitchers who won a contest in India to major league contracts!

In the end Sunday’s Stillers-Ravens game is going to come down to Defense.
The Steelers have the best overall defense in the league thus far and the Ravens are second.
Let’s face it, the Steelers defense may be the best ever.
This is a cliché game and I can’t wait for it. I really just can’t wait; it’s going to be an all out war.
I’d rather see this game played in a busted up parking lot in Aliquippa.
Lambert, Blount and Greene.
What do those three have in common, well they were part of the greatest defense every, the famed Steel Curtain.
But, the Steelers have two of the best ever right now: James Harrison and Troy Polamalu.
Harrison joins Lambert, Blount and Greene as Stillers, who’ve won NFL Defensive Player of the
Year honors and rightfully so as Harrison turned in a tremendous year setting a new single season record for sacks.
Harrison is by far the best linebacker in the game.
Polamalu, the best safety in the game right now could also be the single most exciting defensive player. Hey, he might be the single most exciting player in the league right now period.
Both Harrison and Polamalu have several things in common: They’re tough as nails, play the game with wreck less abandon and both are GAME CHANGERS.
Surely both will play an incredibly key role in Sunday’s Epic Battle.
I finally found a defensive highlight film to RENEGADE, by Styx.
The Steelers will ride Styx all the way to Tampa.
Afterall as Julian said on Sonny’s behalf in Big Daddy.
“He taught me to pee on a building and that Styx is the greatest band in the world and the only got a bad rep because most critics are cynical A$$holes!”
https://mail.lhup.edu/exchweb/bin/redir.asp?URL=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b50m1s_WIIE
This is highlight film of Polamalu and the two greatest interceptions of all-time.
https://mail.lhup.edu/exchweb/bin/redir.asp?URL=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qsdoGC4X1Ss
Some of you hardcore Steelers fans might say hey weren’t there five Steelers to win the Defensive Player of the Year award.
Yes you are correct!
Along with Lambert, Blount, Greene and Harrison one other Stiller has one the award.
Good ole’ Rod Woodson.
Some call him the greatest corner and free safety to ever play the game.
I have to strongly disagree. Afterall he sucked in the ’95 Superbowl and played for the Hated Ravens, sorry but he’ll always be a trader.
And to that he also ruined my first ever Steeler game.
I was there 1996 at Memorial Stadium, 50-yard line, 25 degrees out and freezing rain.
My dad and I sat there freezing and on the Raven’s second TD of the day Woodson got beat so bad I can’t even put it to words as Vinny Testerverde hit Derrick Anderson for a TD.
The Ravens went on to win 31-17.
The say time heals everything, I just don’t know. A Steeler win Sunday, would help heal my broke heart.

OUR Biography!

*Since the Blog has become so popular on the web, I felt it would be time for our fans around the world to get to know us! Below is our Biography!* ENJOY

D. Spat - Born in Da’Burgh, I grew up in the Dirty South, but always kept my true Western Pa. values at heart. I’m a diehard Penguins fan and love my Stillers, but I’m also a realist, who’s had my hopes dashed by both teams too many times. I’d still pick the Buccos to win the Series every April and always will. I’ll argue until the day I die that Mario Lemieux is the great hockey player ever, period. FYI, the only thing I agree about with Marc, who runs this blog, is that Andy Van Slyke needs to be back on the Pirates staff. Don’t worry I’ll write about more than just Pittsburgh sports, I’m cultured and my blogs will include curling, cricket, soccer and ruby. I’m an expert fisherman and scratch golfer so I’ll enlighten you all on that stuff as well. The single worst day of my life is when "33" left Latrobe!

Marc R. - I am Independently Wealthy (unemployed). I enjoy Chinese Buffets and Wing Nights. My favorite pastimes include reclining chairs and watching Sports. My dislikes include guys who say they are experts in things like fishing and golf! I read magazines like Maxim for the articles!
I have watched curling, cricket and rugby. I am a master broadcaster when it comes to soccer. Therefore, I would say that the only expertise in these areas I have is that I figured out that Digital Cable had channels that high. What do you mean this is a blog and not a matchmaker website! Sorry Ladies!

*All comments are welcomed! Not always agreed with, but welcomed!*
Tuesday, one final tribute and it’s back to basics

By: D. Spat.

****I’d like to start by saying I originally did this because I’m crazy and the playoffs really brings out the insanity in my mind. Let’s face it I wore the same boxers for the entire (the entirely long) playoff run by the Penguins.
That being said I sent the email yesterday to some friends and I got some solid replies, but if you’d like to taken of the list, please let me know. There is about 50 of you now so please let me know.
My friend has a blog that all of these are going to and I'm going to be a regular contributor so if you're interest I'll get ya that link as well.
Back to basics
For as long as I can remember the Pittsburgh Steelers have always been about three things.
1. Defense 2. A quarterback who wins, wins wins 3. Running game
That being said, we have No. 1. It pains me that I never got to see the Steel Curtain in action, but if the Steelers are able to win the Superbowl this year, they’ll go down as the one of the greatest defense's ever, if not the single greatest defense in a season ever.
They’re no Steel Curtain yet, they need to win the big show and do it again next year, but they could.
Number two brings me to Big Ben. Let’s face it, in pressure situations there is no better quarterback currently in the NFL. I don’t care what anybody says.
Byron Leftwich, I love him and am president of the Pittsburgh Steelers Chapter of the Leftwich fan club and he’s going to make a lot of money next year, just not as a Steeler and he deserves it. The guy is tough as nails.
But the people saying he should have started last weekend. Come on, really we’ve got a legend in the making.
He may get sacked a lot, but the O-Line still stinks. We yell when he gets sacked, but when he connects on the big play. Everybody Cheers!
Big Ben is best big game quarterback in the game period. Wins are only thing that matters and the kid wins and wins.
I have the running game listed at No. 3 and it should have been listed at two, but it’s been non-existent all year.
On Sunday it returned in a huge way. Willie Parker was everything he needed to be.
The Stillers got back to basics and ran the ball and believe it or not it worked and worked well.
Run the ball, Run the ball and Run the ball. The Ravens can’t stop the Run.
Run the ball, that’s Steeler football.
Franco, Bleier and Bettis and if Willie wins a second Superbowl. I’m sorry you have to put him on the list
Lay off Ben Guys, he’s a proven winner. Payton Manning, yea that Payton Manning, the second rate playoff quarterback who excels in the regular season and worries more about commercials couldn’t hold Ben’s motorcycle helmet.
That brings me to my tribute, the final one of the week.
Enough will be said about the Defense, it’s going to be talked about much more this week. Let’s face it, Sunday’s showdown with the Ravens is going be a battle.
Smash football, which both our beloved Stillers and hated Ravens play is about lining up and hittin' each other in the jaw.
Defense and the Running the ball.
This is something I wrote during the Steelers memorable run in 2006.
It’s an oldie, but a goodie and like I always says “OLD SKOOL” is the best school.
I got a feelin’
Titled: The “Bus” is going home
FYI: The Bus was home in Da'Burgh on Sunday for the coin flip and the place went nuts, he's just a lovable guy.

This was from Pat and Spat: The LHU Eagle Eye From February, 6, 2006

Something was missing on Sunday that I had grown accustomed to for the last 20 weeks. For the past 20 Sundays, I have been able to enjoy football, and with the exception of one bye week on that pointless first Sunday in October, I have been able to enjoy Pittsburgh Steelers football.
The last seven weekends and the games that made them worth having the day off from classes were even more exciting. For the last seven weekends Steelers fans, like myself have enjoyed some of the best football we have seen all year from our beloved black and gold.
Entering week 13 with a disappointing 7-5 record, Steelers fans were left scratching their heads. Last year at this time the team strolled into week 13 with a 10-1 record.
What a difference a year makes?
Needing to win the last four games of the regular season to insure a playoff spot, something special happened and they did just that.
Against all odds they went on the road to win not one, not two, but three playoff games against the top three seeded teams.
Eight weeks ago the Steelers were a team far from perfection, but the past seven times they've hit the field perfect is exactly what they've been.
A sophomore slump for Ben Roethlisberger?
Not quite, as over the last seven games and even more so in the three-playoff games Roethlisberger has earned his nickname as "Big Ben," for he too has been close to perfect.
But looking closely at this Steelers team it is not a seven game streak they're riding, or the play of Big Ben.
It's something deeply embedded in Pittsburgh Steelers football. It hasn't been there as long as the Rooney's or head coach Bill Cowher and it's not Heinz Field, but it still means a lot.
What the Steelers are riding on is their heart and soul for the past 13 seasons.
They are riding a bus that stands at 5'11" inches, weights 255 pounds, is all heart and comes in the form of number 36 Jerome Bettis.
Throw away the rushing yards, rushing averages, the numbers, all the stats and all the touchdowns.
They don't mean anything when you talk about "The Bus."
He is more than just a football player and more than just a star running back.
He is the heart and soul of today's Pittsburgh Steelers and one of the main reasons the Steelers are where they are today, heading to Superbowl XL.
His tough, run right at you attitude and mentally inspires his teammates and echoes what Steelers football has, is and will always be about.
It's the headshake after a hard fought five yards up the middle that has meant so much to this proud franchise over years and brought fans to their feet time and time again in.
After all there is no better scene than when the Steelers have the ball on the seven-yard line and you know exactly where the ball is going.
Picture perfect blocks and another short Jerome Bettis touchdown.
Thousands of fans jump to their feet and sea of gold erupts in the stands as Terrible Towels are waved with enthusiasm.
Time after time, this scene will never get old.
Last year after the season as we saw how much Bettis meant to the team when Hines Ward teared up talking about his teammate that means so much to him, Big Ben made Bettis a promise that if he returned for another season he would take him to the Superbowl. Bettis returned and Big Ben held his end of the deal.
A team of destiny?
I don't know, I can only hope, but we'll find out Sunday.
Regardless of the outcome in the game or whether its his last game or not, Bettis will be looking to gain a few more hard fought yards right up the middle just like he has been doing for 13 seasons in the black and gold.
After all that's still Pittsburgh football and Steelers fans wouldn't have it any other way.

PITT Hoops Team Sinks in Claws in on Big East and NCAA

By: Marc R.

Another Big East showdown and another W for Jamie Dixon and the Pitt Panthers. On the other side of the table, the "crown jewel" of the ACC (The Tarheels) fell Sunday night for the second game in a row. I must admit, the Demon Deacons are good and Teague is a strong guard. However, I do believe the way the Panthers dominated St. John's Sunday (90-67 W) cemented the belief that Pitt is the best team in the land.

When Pitt took over the highest slot in the poles last week (The first time in school history) Jamie Dixon's career hit a new high. After Ben Howland's departure to UCLA, a lot of fans said "Jamie who?" but Dixon's presence on the sideline of the Petersen Events Center was just what the University of Pittsburgh needed in its athletic department. His demeanor is one of excitement and confidence when his team takes the floor. Dixon's actions are fun to watch because he values the opportunity he has be awarded and has made it one of the most sucessful in collegiate basketball. On Sunday, he pumped his fists in delight while crouching down as he approved of another Big East win.

It is hard to argue that The Big East is not the best conference in the NCAA for basketball. I know men like Digger Phelps and "The General" would agree. With Pitt at the top of the conference and the rankings; the ACC, the Big 12 and Pac-10 have a lot of work to do to prove their dominance throughout the long winter months. When March rolls around, the Panthers will be a number one seed and will be playing in Detroit in the Final Four.

Isn't it convenient that a team from the Steel City will once again dominate Ford Field in a final. This time it will not be with a pigskin, but an orange sphere!

I know Jamie's younger sister, Maggie, is looking down on her big brother with a smile and her much deserved wings are helping to lift the Panthers this season!

Monday is for Myron
By Douglas C. Spatafore Jr.

On Sunday, Jan. 18 the Pittsburgh Steelers welcome the Baltimore “Purple Pigeons” to Heinz Field.
Currently in the NFL, there may be no greater rivalry. Honestly it ranks at one of the best in sports period and this game will not disappoint.
If you’re like me, then you may not sleep much in anticipation of the blood bath that will surely take place.
In honor of our beloved Stillers, I think it only fitting to pay homage to them this week and relish the fact that they will stomp all over the hated Ravens this Sunday in Da’ Burgh.
Monday is for Mr. Myron Cope, a Pittsburgh Legend, who left Pittsburghers’ with our beloved Terrible Towels.
Any non-Pittsburgh fan may call it nothing more than a glorified dish rag, but we know it’s more than that and holds the hopes and prayers of Steeler Fans worldwide together.
After all Edgar Allen Poe, a second-rate poet and writer left Baltimore with nothing more than a stupid mascot. FYI, he wasn’t even born in Baltimore, he’s from Boston.
So get your Terrible Towels out now and wave them proudly this week.
It’s go time baby, HERE WE GO!

Below is a link for a short video tribute to Mr. Cope

Thank you for time and God Bless Steeler Nation.

Steelers Playoff Game!

Marc R.

People need to start listening to me! First of all, anyone who thinks or says The Chargers are hot and Darren Sproles is the best back in the league needs to realize they Colts play was the equivelent of a Pop Warner team on Saturday night.

Troy P. and the Steel Curtain is the best defense in the NFL for a reason! If you let the the seconday do their thing and linebackers blitz every down, the win will be secured by the start of the 2nd quarter.

As for the offense, Big Ben's head is still a little woozy. Save him for the AFC Championship! I am going to go out on a limb and say that Ben can be #2 on the depth chart for his game and put the ball in the hands of Leftwich for the game. All the weapons are in place. With Moore, Parker and Russell in the backfield and Miller, Ward and Washington able to catch; Byron can easily manage the game. Let him hand it off 80% of the plays and even a backup can complete a 5-yard out pattern on third down.

That's not to say Ben cannot come in. If Byron can't get the job done by the early part of the 2nd quarter, make the change. We have seen flashes of brilliance, so why not give him a chance.

I don't think it really matters who is behind center as long as Arians is the offensive coordinator. If the Administration thinks Bruce Arians is the answer after the season ends, then maybe Rod Marinelli should have been retained as head coach of the 0-16 Lions!

Welcome!

You have entered SID's blog! This is a blog where the authors will analyze athletics of our choosing. It may range from little league baseball to professional sports. I am not going to lie, but the focus will be on Pittsburgh sports. Some will speak on the Steelers, The Penguins and even the Pirates! We will also speak about other sports including Pitt and Penn State. So, we will be back shortly with another update.
